Endodontics is the speciality that saves teeth. When decay, a crack or trauma reaches the pulp inside a tooth, root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, disinfects the canal system and seals it, so the natural tooth can stay in function instead of being extracted.

How a case usually runs
Step 1
Pain assessment
Examination, vitality testing and a radiograph to confirm whether the pulp is involved and whether infection has spread.
Step 2
Root canal treatment
Cleaning, shaping and disinfecting the canal system. Many teeth are completed in a single visit; infected and re-treatment cases may need two.
Step 3
Crown or restoration
A treated back tooth is usually protected with a crown so it does not fracture under chewing load.
Step 4
Review
A follow-up radiograph to confirm healing of the surrounding bone.

Common questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
The procedure itself is done under local anaesthesia and is usually comfortable. Most of the pain patients remember belongs to the infection before treatment, which settles once the canal is cleaned. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
Can a failed root canal be redone?
Often yes. Re-treatment removes the old filling material, finds missed anatomy and reseals the canals. Where re-treatment is not enough, an apicoectomy treats the root tip surgically.
Do I really need a crown after a root canal?
For back teeth, usually yes — a treated tooth is more brittle and a crown protects it from splitting. Front teeth with small access cavities can sometimes be restored with a filling instead. Your endodontist will tell you which applies to your tooth.
