Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, disinfects the canal system and seals it, so the tooth can stay in function instead of being extracted.
Using rotary instrumentation, apex locators and magnification, most straightforward cases are completed in one sitting with profound anaesthesia — the procedure relieves pain rather than causing it.
Signs you may need a root canal
Lingering pain after hot or cold, throbbing at night, pain on biting, a swelling or bad taste near a tooth, or a tooth that has darkened. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and the infection is found on a routine X-ray.

Why a crown after root canal?
A root-canal-treated back tooth has lost internal structure and becomes brittle. A crown, usually zirconia or E-max, distributes chewing load and dramatically reduces the risk of a vertical fracture that would cost you the tooth.
Re-treatment and apicoectomy
Not every failing root canal needs extraction. With magnification we can remove old filling material, locate missed canals and re-seal the system. Where a re-treatment is not feasible, a small surgical procedure at the root tip can save the tooth.

Frequently asked questions
Does root canal hurt?
No. With modern anaesthesia the procedure is painless. Mild tenderness for two to three days afterwards is normal and settles with routine medication.
Can it be done in one visit?
Yes for most teeth. Cases with active swelling or heavy infection may need two visits to allow the canal to settle.
Is extraction cheaper?
Only in the short term. Replacing the tooth later with an implant or bridge costs considerably more than saving it now.
