A root canal that continues to hurt, that flares up periodically, or that shows a persistent dark area on radiograph has failed. In most cases the reason is mechanical: a canal that was never located, a canal cleaned short of its end, or a leaking coronal seal that let bacteria back in.
Re-treatment removes the old filling material, finds and treats what was missed, disinfects the entire canal system and seals it properly. Done by an endodontist under a microscope, it saves the majority of these teeth.
Why root canals fail
The most common cause is an untreated canal — the second mesiobuccal canal of an upper molar is missed in a large proportion of cases treated without magnification, and it is a frequent source of persistent infection.
Other causes are under-filling, over-instrumentation, a fractured instrument left in the canal, a leaking temporary or a crown placed late, and vertical root fracture. Only the last of these makes the tooth genuinely unsalvageable.
Re-treatment or extraction and implant?
A natural tooth with a sound root and adequate remaining structure is almost always worth saving. It has a periodontal ligament, proprioception and a bone-preserving root that no implant reproduces.
Where the root is vertically fractured, or where too little tooth remains above the bone to restore, extraction with an implant is the honest recommendation and we will make it rather than sell a re-treatment that will not last.

What does re-treatment cost in Jaipur?

What is the success rate?
Published success rates for microscope-assisted re-treatment are broadly in the 70–85% range, depending on the cause of the original failure and the state of the tooth.
Is it more painful than the first time?
Not usually. It is a longer appointment, but the anaesthesia and post-operative experience are comparable to a first root canal.
