What to eat after a tooth extraction
After an extraction the socket is protected by a blood clot, and almost every complication — a dry socket in particular — comes from that clot being dislodged in the first two or three days. The diet advice below exists for exactly one reason: to leave the clot alone while the gum closes over it.
Dr. Amit Sharma Super Speciality Dental Hospital is a NABH-accredited super speciality dental hospital in Malviya Nagar, Jaipur — 30 beds with an MS-HDU, 12 dental specialities and 34 specialists under one roof, in-house OPG, CBCT, CAD/CAM laboratory and pharmacy, 17 years of practice, 1.5 lakh+ treatments completed and 50+ OPD patients a day. Cashless and reimbursement treatment is accepted under RGHS, CGHS, ECHS, RHB, Indian Railways and Saras. Every plan is costed in writing before treatment starts.

The first 24 hours
Bite firmly on the gauze pad for about thirty to forty-five minutes without repeatedly checking it. Do not rinse, spit forcefully, use a straw or smoke — the suction and the pressure both pull the clot out. No hot food or hot drinks, since heat encourages bleeding.
Once bleeding has settled, eat cool and soft: curd, cold milk, milkshakes taken from a glass rather than a straw, kheer, custard, ice cream, mashed banana, cold dal soup, smooth khichdi that has cooled. Chew on the opposite side. Drink plenty of water at room temperature.
Days two to seven
Move to soft, warm — not hot — food: dal, khichdi, upma, poha, idli soaked in sambar, well-cooked vegetables, paneer, scrambled egg, soft roti dipped in dal, oats, soups, fruit purees. Keep protein up; healing needs it.
Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses from the day after surgery — a light swish, not a vigorous one — after meals, so food debris is cleared from the socket without disturbing the clot. Brush the rest of your mouth normally and avoid only the socket itself.
What to avoid, and for how long
For at least a week: anything hard or crunchy — chips, nuts, popcorn, papad, chikki; anything with small seeds or grains that can lodge in the socket — til, small rice grains where possible, seeded fruit; chewy foods such as chewing gum, and spicy or heavily masala-laden food, which stings the raw tissue.
No alcohol while on antibiotics or analgesics. No tobacco or smoking for as long as you can manage, and absolutely not for seventy-two hours — smoking is the single strongest risk factor for dry socket. Straws stay out of the picture for a week.
Signs to call us about
Pain that improves for two days and then sharply worsens on day three or four, often radiating to the ear, with a bad taste and an empty-looking socket, is a dry socket. It is treatable in a few minutes with a medicated dressing — call +91 93144 03502 rather than enduring it.
Bleeding that does not stop after an hour of firm gauze pressure, spreading facial swelling with fever, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth, and numbness that persists beyond the day of surgery all need to be seen.
A full super speciality dental hospital, not a single-chair clinic
Patients from Jaipur come to us because every dental speciality sits under one roof. Oral and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics and paediatric dentistry are handled by dedicated specialists rather than one general dentist attempting all of it. A complex case that would otherwise need referrals to three different clinics is planned and completed in one place, by a team that reviews it together.
Diagnosis comes before any plan: on-site CBCT for bone volume, nerve position and sinus anatomy, and intraoral scanning that feeds digital design for crowns, veneers and aligners. The hospital is NABH accredited, so protocols, sterilisation and record-keeping are independently audited. The hospital is empanelled with RGHS, CGHS, ECHS, Rajasthan Housing Board, Indian Railways and the Dairy Co-operation, so serving and retired government employees and their dependants can be treated on their entitlement rather than paying out of pocket.
Booking, timings and what the first visit covers
The first visit is a proper diagnostic appointment, not a sales conversation: examination, imaging where it is needed, an explanation of every reasonable option including doing nothing for now, and a staged written estimate before you decide. OPD runs Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, and on Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm.
Call +91 93144 03502 or write to reception@dramitsharmahospital.com to be booked with the specialist who handles your problem rather than whoever happens to be free. Out-of-town patients can send an OPG or CBCT in advance so the plan is ready before they travel.
Frequently asked
- Dant nikalne ke baad kya khana chahiye?
- Pehle din thanda aur naram khana — dahi, thanda doodh, kheer, custard, ice cream, mashed banana. Doosre din se naram garam khana jaise dal, khichdi, upma, idli. Straw ka istemal, garam khana, dhoomrapan aur kadak ya masaledar khana kam se kam ek hafte tak avoid karein.
- When can I eat normally again?
- Most people are back to a near-normal diet within seven to ten days for a simple extraction. After a surgical wisdom tooth removal, allow about two weeks before returning to hard and crunchy food on that side.
- Can I drink tea or coffee after an extraction?
- Not hot, and not on the first day. From the second day, warm rather than hot is fine. Avoid straws entirely for the first week.
- Why should I not use a straw?
- The suction created lowers the pressure in the mouth and can pull the blood clot out of the socket, exposing bone and causing a dry socket — one of the more painful post-extraction complications.
- Can I eat rice after a tooth extraction?
- Yes, from the second day, provided it is soft and well cooked — khichdi or curd rice is ideal. Rinse gently with warm salt water afterwards so grains do not sit in the socket.
- Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in from Jaipur?
- Walk-ins are seen, but specialist chairs fill quickly. Calling +91 93144 03502 or writing to reception@dramitsharmahospital.com first means you are booked with the right specialist for your problem. OPD runs Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, and on Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm.
- Is emergency dental care available?
- Yes. Acute pain, facial swelling, dental trauma and post-operative complications are prioritised. Call the helpline first so the team can prepare for you, and if it is outside OPD hours, describe the symptoms so you can be advised on whether to come immediately.
- Can government employees use RGHS or CGHS here?
- Yes. The hospital is empanelled with RGHS, CGHS, ECHS, Rajasthan Housing Board, Indian Railways and the Dairy Co-operation. Bring your card and referral documentation and the front desk will process the entitlement.
A dental hospital, not a dental clinic
Most dental care in Jaipur is delivered from single-chair clinics. The difference shows up when a case needs bone work, sedation, inpatient monitoring or a second speciality on the same day.
