The General Recommendation

For most people with generally healthy gums and no significant risk factors, a professional cleaning every six months is a well-established recommendation. This interval allows removal of plaque and calculus that has built up beyond what daily brushing and flossing can address, while also providing an opportunity for the dentist to check for early signs of decay, gum disease or other concerns.

Six months is a useful default, but it is not a rigid rule that applies equally to everyone. Your specific oral health status, lifestyle and medical history should guide the ideal interval for you personally, which is something we assess and discuss at each visit.

Who May Need More Frequent Visits

Patients with a history of gum disease, particularly periodontitis, generally benefit from cleanings every three to four months as part of ongoing maintenance, since this closer interval helps control bacterial regrowth in pockets before it can cause further damage to bone and tissue.

Similarly, patients who are heavy plaque or calculus formers, smokers or tobacco users, those with diabetes, pregnant women, and individuals wearing braces or other appliances that make cleaning more difficult often benefit from more frequent professional cleanings to keep their oral health stable between visits.

Signs You May Need to Come in Sooner

Regardless of your usual schedule, certain signs warrant an earlier visit, including gums that bleed persistently, new sensitivity, a change in how your bite feels, visible tartar build-up, or persistent bad breath despite good home care. These signs suggest active changes that benefit from prompt professional attention.

It is always better to come in for an evaluation when something feels different rather than waiting for the next scheduled appointment, as catching changes early typically means simpler, more comfortable treatment and a better long-term outcome for your teeth and gums.

Questions patients ask us

Is six months really necessary if my teeth feel fine?
Yes, many dental and gum problems develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular cleanings and examinations catch issues like early decay or gum inflammation before they cause discomfort, making treatment simpler and less invasive.
Can I get my teeth cleaned too often?
Professional cleaning performed by a trained dentist or hygienist at appropriate intervals does not damage healthy teeth or gums. The interval is tailored to your needs, so more frequent cleanings recommended for gum disease patients are appropriate and beneficial rather than excessive.
Do children need cleanings as often as adults?
Children generally benefit from a similar six-monthly schedule, which also allows monitoring of developing teeth, early cavity detection and reinforcement of good oral hygiene habits from a young age.
What happens during a professional cleaning appointment?
A cleaning appointment typically includes removal of plaque and calculus using specialised instruments, polishing of the teeth, and an examination of the gums and teeth for any early signs of concern, alongside guidance on improving your home care if needed.
