Gum disease begins as gingivitis — bleeding when brushing, redness, bad breath — and is entirely reversible at that stage. Left alone it progresses to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is destroyed. That part is not reversible; it can only be stopped.
More adult teeth are lost in India to periodontal disease than to decay. It is painless until late, which is exactly why it is missed.
Why a routine cleaning is not the same treatment
A scale and polish removes deposits above the gum. Periodontal therapy removes them from inside the pockets, along the root surface, which is where the disease actually lives. The second requires anaesthesia, time and measurement.
We chart pocket depths at six points around every tooth before and after treatment, so improvement is measured rather than assumed.
Diabetes and gum disease
The relationship runs both ways: poorly controlled diabetes worsens periodontal disease, and active periodontal infection makes blood glucose harder to control. Treating the gums frequently improves HbA1c.
We coordinate with your physician where control is poor, because treating one without the other rarely holds.
Maintenance is the treatment
After active therapy, pockets stay stable only with three- to six-monthly maintenance visits. Patients who attend keep their teeth; patients who stop attending relapse within two years, and that pattern is very consistent.
This is the least glamorous part of dentistry and by far the highest return on money spent.
