Gum Surgery & Depigmentation

Gum shape and colour decide how a smile reads as much as the teeth do.

A gummy smile, an uneven gum line, exposed root surfaces or dark pigmented gums are all treatable, and all change the appearance of a smile without touching a single tooth.

These are surgical procedures performed under local anaesthesia, planned against the tooth proportions and lip line rather than done freehand.

Gum recession — cosmetic and functional

Recession exposes root surface, which is softer than enamel, sensitive to cold, and prone to decay. It also makes teeth look long and aged.

Connective tissue grafting or a pinhole technique can cover exposed roots predictably in the right cases. The cause — aggressive brushing, a thin biotype, a high frenal attachment, or occlusal trauma — is corrected first, or the graft simply recedes again.

Depigmentation of dark gums

Melanin pigmentation of the gums is entirely benign and extremely common. Where it bothers a patient, laser depigmentation lightens the tissue in one or two sessions with minimal discomfort.

Healing takes seven to ten days. Some pigment can return over several years, particularly in smokers, and we say so before treatment.

What your treatment journey looks like

  1. Step 1
    Smile line analysis

Lip line, tooth proportions and bone levels assessed with photographs and probing.

  2. Step 2
    Planning

Surgical guide or planned incision line established against the intended tooth display.

  3. Step 3
    Procedure

Performed under local anaesthesia, by scalpel or laser depending on the case.

  4. Step 4
    Healing & review

Seven to fourteen days of soft-tissue maturation, with review before any restorative work.

Frequently asked questions

Is gum surgery painful?

It is done under local anaesthesia and is not painful during the procedure. Soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and managed with simple analgesics.

How soon can veneers be placed after crown lengthening?

Gum margins need six to twelve weeks to stabilise. Placing definitive ceramics before that is the usual reason margins later look wrong.

Will dark gums come back after laser treatment?

Often not for many years, but repigmentation is possible, particularly with tobacco use. Touch-up sessions are straightforward if needed.

Why this matters for your case

Gum Surgery & Depigmentation in a hospital setting, not a single chair

Most dental care in Jaipur is delivered from single-chair clinics. The difference shows up when a case needs bone work, sedation, inpatient monitoring or a second speciality on the same day.
