Daily technique
Brush twice daily for two full minutes using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush held at roughly forty-five degrees to the gumline, using small circular motions rather than a hard back-and-forth scrub. After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste but avoid rinsing with water immediately, since this washes away the protective fluoride film that continues working on the enamel.
Clean between the teeth once a day with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, ideally before brushing so that the fluoride toothpaste can then reach the surfaces that have just been cleared of plaque. A toothbrush alone reaches only around sixty percent of tooth surfaces, leaving the contact areas between teeth, where decay and gum disease commonly begin, untouched.
Diet and decay
Tooth decay is driven far more by how often sugar is consumed than by the total quantity eaten in a day. Frequent sipping of sweetened tea, soft drinks, or repeated snacking throughout the day keeps the mouth in an acidic state for many hours, giving bacteria continuous fuel to produce the acid that dissolves enamel.
Confining sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes, rather than spreading them across the day, gives saliva the chance to neutralise acid and remineralise enamel between exposures. Chewing sugar-free gum after meals can further stimulate helpful saliva flow.
Fluoride and remineralisation
Fluoride works by strengthening the enamel crystal structure, making it more resistant to acid attack, and by helping to repair very early, microscopic decay before a cavity forms. A pea-sized amount of standard-strength fluoride toothpaste is appropriate for adults and most children over the age of six.
For patients at higher risk of decay, additional professional fluoride varnish applications during check-up visits provide an extra protective boost beyond daily toothpaste use.
Professional recall
A check-up and professional cleaning every six months, or more frequently if recommended based on individual risk, detects decay, cracks, gum pockets and early oral lesions long before they become symptomatic, and at a fraction of the eventual cost of treating an advanced problem.
Radiographs taken periodically during recall visits reveal decay between teeth that cannot be seen or felt during a routine visual examination, which is a major reason why regular attendance matters even when nothing feels wrong.
Questions patients ask us
- Electric or manual brush?
- Oscillating-rotating electric brushes remove modestly more plaque on average, especially helpful for those with limited manual dexterity, but good manual brushing technique performed thoroughly is perfectly adequate for most people.
- Is mouthwash necessary?
- Mouthwash is a helpful addition for some patients, particularly antimicrobial rinses for gum disease, but it does not replace brushing and interdental cleaning, which physically remove plaque that rinsing alone cannot.
- How do I know if I am brushing correctly?
- Disclosing tablets, available from a pharmacy, temporarily stain remaining plaque so you can see exactly which areas are being missed, and a dentist or hygienist can also demonstrate technique directly during a visit.
