Temporomandibular disorders cause jaw pain, clicking or grating on opening, episodes of locking, headaches around the temples, and pain that radiates to the ear and neck. Patients are frequently told it is stress and sent away.
It is a genuine musculoskeletal and joint problem with an identifiable cause in most cases — muscle overactivity from clenching, a displaced articular disc, arthritic change, or an occlusal problem — and the management differs for each.
Clicking is not automatically a problem
A painless click without limitation of opening frequently needs monitoring rather than treatment. What needs attention is pain, restricted opening, episodes of locking, or a change in how the teeth meet.
Aggressive irreversible treatment — grinding down teeth or full-mouth reconstruction — for a clicking joint alone is a well-documented mistake and we do not do it.
Conservative treatment first, always
Splint therapy, jaw rest, soft diet, targeted physiotherapy, warm compresses and short-term anti-inflammatory medication resolve or substantially improve the large majority of cases.
Where conservative measures fail after an adequate trial, arthrocentesis or, rarely, arthroscopic and open joint surgery is considered — assessed and performed by the maxillofacial team.
What your treatment journey looks like
- Step 1History & examination
Pain mapping, opening range measurement, joint and muscle palpation, occlusal assessment.
- Step 2Imaging
CBCT or MRI where the diagnosis requires it, rather than routinely.
- Step 3Conservative phase
Splint therapy, physiotherapy and medication, with review at defined intervals.
- Step 4Escalation if needed
Arthrocentesis or surgical management for cases that do not respond.
Frequently asked questions
Will a night guard fix my jaw pain?
It helps a great deal in clenching-driven pain, which is the most common presentation. It is chosen based on the diagnosis, not issued to everyone with jaw pain.
Can my bite be the cause?
Sometimes, particularly after a high crown or filling. That is checked at the first appointment because it is quick to identify and quick to correct.
How long does treatment take?
Most patients see meaningful improvement within six to twelve weeks of conservative therapy, with review appointments to confirm progress.
TMJ & Jaw Joint Treatment in a hospital setting, not a single chair
Most dental care in Jaipur is delivered from single-chair clinics. The difference shows up when a case needs bone work, sedation, inpatient monitoring or a second speciality on the same day.

Who treats you, and what stands behind it
Patients travelling from Jaipur are seen by the specialist whose field the problem sits in — not by whoever is free. Every plan is imaged, written down and costed before treatment begins.
Leads the surgical and implant service — single-tooth to full-arch and zygomatic rehabilitation, impacted third molars, cysts, jaw pathology and facial trauma, all planned on CBCT before surgery.
Handles crowns, veneers, full-mouth rehabilitation and implant prosthetics, designed digitally and milled on the in-house CAD/CAM unit for shade and fit accuracy.
Treats painful, previously failed and calcified canals under a dental operating microscope, including retreatment and apical surgery where a tooth is worth saving.
Sterilisation, records and patient-safety protocols independently audited — rare in dentistry.
