What do I do if a tooth is knocked out or broken?
This is one of the few dental situations where minutes matter. A permanent tooth that has been knocked out completely has the best prognosis when it is replanted within the first hour: hold it by the crown, never the root, rinse it briefly in milk or saline if dirty, and either replace it into the socket or transport it in milk. A fractured tooth should be kept clean and protected from biting forces, with the fragment brought along. Milk teeth are not replanted.

- Handle a knocked-out tooth by the crown only; do not scrub the root
- Transport it in milk, saline or the patient's own saliva — never in water or dry tissue
- Control bleeding with firm gauze pressure and come in immediately
- Bring any broken fragment with you; it can sometimes be bonded back
