Professional whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth using a controlled peroxide gel, either in a single in-chair session or over two weeks with custom trays at home. Both work; they suit different people.
What separates a good result from a bad one is the assessment beforehand — whether the discolouration is intrinsic or extrinsic, whether there is exposed dentine, and whether existing crowns or fillings in the smile zone will end up mismatched.
What whitening cannot do
It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or composite fillings. If you have a crown on a front tooth, whitening the teeth around it will make the mismatch more obvious, and that crown will need replacing afterwards to match — a cost that should be discussed before, not after.
Tetracycline staining, fluorosis and single dark root-canal-treated teeth respond poorly or unpredictably to standard whitening and are usually better treated with internal bleaching or veneers.
Sensitivity, and how it is managed
Transient sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours is the most common side effect and it is normal, not damage. We reduce it with a desensitising agent before treatment and potassium nitrate gel afterwards.
Patients with existing recession or exposed root surfaces need a modified protocol, and occasionally a different treatment altogether. Over-the-counter kits used on such teeth are how people end up in genuine pain.
